UW CORAL Web Front End : Equipment Tab

Subsystems

The Subsystems tab lists equipment marked with the Is a Subsystem flag, along with its status (up, problem, shutdown, or spare); which equipment it is connected to, if any; and if none, where it is located.

Spare subsystems are those that have no problems or shutdowns, but are not connected to equipment. These can be connected to equipment using the Connect button. A subsystem that is being removed from an instrument, either for preventative maintenance or due to failure, can be marked relocated and its status changed by pressing the Relocate button. (Subsystems can also be relocated when they are not connected to equipment.) Both of these operations create entries in the subsystem's maintenance log noting that the operation has taken place.

Equipment subsystems are organized according to their area in the equipment tree; only areas flagged "Can hold subsystems" appear in the drop-down menu. Similarly, only locations flagged "Can hold subsystems" will appear in the dialog as options for placing subsystems. Equipment out for repair may be placed in the special pseudo-location Out for Repair.

Please note that depending on what part of the maintenance workflow you are operating in at the moment, it may be more convenient to use the buttons on the Equipment > Maintenance tab rather than this tab. The intended workflow is:

  1. Identify instrument with a misbehaving subsystem, or that requires preventative maintenance.
  2. Discover which specific subsystem it is that is at issue, either by physical inspection or using the Equipment > Maintenance tab.
  3. Mark the instrument down, using the Equipment > Maintenance tab.
  4. Physically disconnect the old subsystem.
  5. Locate a new, replacement subsystem from spares using the Equipment > Subsystems tab.
  6. Physically connect the new subsystem.
  7. Mark the new connection using the Connect button of the Equipment > Subsystems tab.
  8. Hand off to the equipment owner for qual with a maintenance update or mark equipment up, using the Equipment > Maintenance tab.
  9. Perform maintenance or send old subsystem out for repair.
  10. Note the old subsystem's new location and make a maintenance comment, using the Relocate button on the Equipment > Subsystems tab.
